Beacon Hub Site - Main Office - John Muir Elementary



The Western Addition Beacon Center at John Muir Elementary provides quality after-school programming for youth and also serves as a community center addressing the specific needs of the Western Addition community.
A program of the Buchanan YMCA and the San Francisco Beacon Initiative, our mission is to enrich the lives of community members and to ensure the healthy development of young people. We offer a wide variety of before school and after-school programming with adult and family services, including 21st century technology classes, cultural arts, recreation activities and monthly community events. We also offer Case Management Services for youth and young adults that need one-to-one support.

Beacon Technology Lab
   
New at the Beacon Center for 2011 is our state of the art Computer Technology Lab. Featuring all new Windows 7 and iMac computers, this valuable resource is available free of charge for our community members. The Beacon technology lab delivers much needed computer and internet experience using curricula based software for our K-5 participants during the school day.

Another goal of the Beacon Technology Lab is a Broadband Awareness component. Funded by the BTOP initiative, a Federal initiative aimed at expanding broadband access and adoption across America. This component funds a variety of youth, teen, adult, and family classes free to the public such as:

- Computer Hardware and Operating System Basics
- Safe Web Surfing, Online Bill Paying and Information Research Basics
- Audio, Video, and Multimedia Editing and Management
- Microsoft Office Suite training, Word Documents, Publisher Creation, Excel Database Basics, and PowerPoint Presentation Basics

The Beacon Technology Lab is also available for individual use during scheduled open lab times, as well we offer one-to-one tutoring sessions on a variety of computer based topics.

The Technology lab is available for group use for trainings, presentations and workshops for organizations in our neighborhood.

Garden to Table:

An environmental education program in which youth acquire the necessary skills to live a healthy life through garden education, nutritious cooking & eating, and green jobs training.

Kaiser, Gateway to Fitness: A joint partnership of the SF Beacon Initiative and Kaiser Permanente. This program provides curriculum, support & incentives for the successful implementation of nutrition and fitness programs with three main goals:

1. To increase the physical activity of youth 10-15 years of age through a variety of community-based youth sports and recreation activities;


2. To provide culturally-appropriate nutrition education through hands-on food preparation and cooking classes; and..


3. To foster parental support and involvement through joint activities and parent focused events such as awards celebrations and group dinners.


Scores: America SCORES partners with urban schools to provide a high quality, team-based program that integrates soccer, poetry and service-learning. Their innovative approach improves students' health, academic achievement and civic engagement.


Handful Players: Handful Players is a nonprofit children's musical theater. We're all about helping kids find their creative voice, building self-esteem and learning skills for getting ahead in life.


Mighty Milers:
Mighty Milers is a progressive marathon program where children run or walk regularly and learn how to integrate healthy habits into their lifestyles.


Basketball: Participants in grades 2-5 have the opportunity to engage in positive relationship development and collaboration, while learning basketball and teamwork skills.


Acro Sports:
Teaches and develops the physical, performing, and circus arts through activities that encourage teamwork, strength building, self-esteem, and enhances life's experience.


New York Road Runners: NYRR youth programs foster healthy and fit kids by providing free running programs, resources, and activities for educators who want to bring fitness into their schools.

Community Grows:
Community Grows is an environmental education program serving high-needs youth, especially those living in public housing in San Francisco. Youth acquire the necessary skills to live a healthy life through garden education, nutritious cooking and eating, and green jobs training.
